Camps
There were at least 150 NMP camps across Queensland. Some of these were short-lived, lasting a year or less, while others became regional bases and were used over several decades. Twenty-five of these camps were positively located and recorded as part of this project.
The number and physical location of camps provides an insight into Aboriginal people’s responses to European settlement. There tended to be more camps in areas with higher Aboriginal population densities, and these are often located in closer proximity to each other. Some areas, such as the Palmer River, had many camps established at different times, indicating repeated and sustained Aboriginal resistance in the wider region. Several camps were also established to protect the Telegraph stations across to the Gulf of Carpentaria and along the Cape York line.
