Although a stranger to police camps, I always understood that order, regularity, and some degree of neatness characterised the movements of a military force, and therefore my surprise was great indeed when, on presenting myself at the barracks, I learned that the commander was in bed, and saw the troopers lolling on the ground in confusion and disorder, whilst here and there were interspersed gins and black-fellows, not in any way connected with the police force. Altogether the camp appeared to me to be similar, in nearly every particular, to a camp of wild natives, as seen in a scrub.
