Archaeology

Over 200 Native Mounted Police Camps have been recorded in historical documents or oral histories. Some of these were very short lived, others were occupied for considerable periods of time. Camps could be referred to in many different ways—often by the river or watercourse they were situated on (e.g. Barcoo River, Clayhole Creek), sometimes by the name of the property on which they were located (e.g. Albinia Downs, Cashmere), or according to a town (e.g. Tambo, Blackall) or some other feature relevant to their location (e.g. Eight Mile).
